As we look back to the 30 August 2024 story, teenage skipper Harry Besley’s Round Britain voyage in “Electra”, a Galaxy Pilot 6.5 electric rigid inflatable boat, still stands out as a clear marker in the progress of electric RIBs in real operations. Although Wolf Rock was not directly involved in the project, we are pleased the Galaxy Pilot 6.5 was chosen as the platform and we congratulate Harry and his support team on the record.
Built on a 6.5 metre aluminium deep-V hull with heavy-duty Hypalon tubes, the Galaxy Pilot 6.5 is a commercial-grade RIB platform designed for patrol, rescue and workboat roles. For this challenge the boat was fitted with an electric outboard and high-capacity battery system, delivering practical coastal range at typical passage speeds while retaining the handling and seakeeping expected from professional Commercial RIBs.
Across more than 1,700 nautical miles and multiple coastal legs, the boat operated from standard marina berths while taking advantage of available shorepower and rapid charging where possible. The hull and collar combination provided predictable handling, good freeboard and secure crew positions in the short, variable sea states often found around the UK coastline. “This voyage shows what commercial-grade electric RIBs are starting to achieve in real conditions.”
For professional operators, the record highlights how electric Rigid Inflatable Boats are beginning to move from trials into realistic coastal missions. To discuss a Galaxy Pilot 6.5 for patrol, training or support duties, you can contact the team through galaxyboats.co.uk.
